About the Book
The book Helva in Turkish Culture explores the historical and social significance of helva in Turkish culture. Following the adoption of Islam, helva found its place in religious ceremonies and social life, beginning with rituals associated with the cult of the dead in ancient Turkish beliefs. Used during many rites of passage, such as births, deaths, weddings and holidays, helva has also found its way into proverbs, idioms, folk songs and poetry. During the Ottoman period, it became the subject of cultural events, such as 'helva gatherings'. As part of a project initiated in 2015 under the leadership of Marmara University, field studies were conducted in various Turkish provinces, examining the different types of helva, their names, social functions and literary reflections. This research, completed in 2018, revealed that helva is not just food, but a cultural element that has left its mark on the economic, sociological, artistic, religious and literary dimensions of Turkish culture. These findings were presented at a symposium and published in a book.
