About the Book
Frames for Political Analysis is an expanded version of the author’s political science lecture notes, which date back to 1992. It aims to examine politics within a systematic, comprehensive and historical framework. The book provides an overview of politics through the following six themes:
The State and the Political Centre
Political Powers and Markets
Synthetic categories
World politics
The relationship between politics and society.
History and Systems
The first chapters address the concept of politics, its historical development and analytical methods. The subsequent chapters cover:
- traditional and modern political systems;
- the structure of the state;
- forms of legitimacy;
- the relationship between governance and bureaucracy.
Parties, ideologies, elites and pressure groups;
- democracy, regimes, the world system and the evolution of the nation state;
The relationship between politics and the economy, class, culture and religion; and
The relationship between politics and the economy, class, culture and religion.
The final sections focus on political attitudes and behaviours in the social environment.
This book is not merely a set of lecture notes; it is also an analytical, historical and critical study of political science.
