About the Book
The Hamidiye Higher School of Commerce was established in 1883 during the reign of Abdulhamid II through the initiative of Suphi Pasha. It was the Ottoman Empire’s first school of commerce and one of the world’s oldest higher schools of commerce. Unlike most Ottoman schools, the Hamidiye School of Commerce ensured educational continuity; it later became the Higher School of Commerce, then the Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences, finally evolving into Marmara University. In the book The Founding School of Marmara University: Hamidiye School of Commerce, Ottoman archival documents were examined in order to provide a detailed account of the establishment process, mission and historical development of the Hamidiye School of Commerce based on these records.
